I had the pleasure of photographing Irvine Welsh at the Paisley Art Festival, where he spoke about his longtime friend and collaborator Pam Hogg.

Both emerging from the raw, electric energy of London’s 1980s club scene, their paths first crossed in a world defined by underground music, bold fashion, and creative rebellion. While Welsh would go on to capture the grit and voice of a generation through his writing, Hogg carved out her own space as a fearless and influential fashion designer, known for her punk spirit and uncompromising vision.

Hearing Irvine reflect on those early days—full of chaos, creativity, and connection—offered a glimpse into a friendship shaped by shared roots and deep respect.

A special moment capturing not just a portrait, but a piece of cultural history—well, for me that’s for sure. I even got the chance to tell him that it was his books, and the phonetic way he wrote them, that gave a young adult from the north of Ireland the chance to enjoy reading for the first time.
